On Thursday and Friday, there will be plus degrees, offering a foretaste of spring. However, Geosphere Austria is predicting the onset of winter for the weekend.
This will not only bring a cooling down but also snowfall down to low altitudes, except for the south, where the limit for the white splendor is above 1,000 meters.
The weather turns wintry again at the weekend
“The mild weather is coming to an end. Over the course of the weekend, it will get much colder and snow will fall down to low altitudes,” said meteorologist Clemens Biermair on Wednesday. “The details are still uncertain, but as things stand, it will be white on Sunday in most of Austria, and Sunday will bring an icy day with temperatures below zero degrees all day in many regions. Slight plus degrees are possible in the south.”
The westerly current brings unsettled weather on Thursday
A strong westerly current will bring unsettled weather to most of Austria on Thursday with a rapid change between sun, clouds, and short showers. Snow will fall up to around 1,200 to 900 meters. In the south, it will remain dry and mostly sunny throughout the day. The wind will be brisk to strong in the northern half of Austria, with gale-force winds from the west at higher altitudes in Lower Austria, while it will remain rather light in the south. Early temperatures, depending on the wind, are minus five to plus eight degrees, and daytime highs are up to 13 degrees.
High clouds move across the sky on Friday
Some high clouds will move through on Friday morning and will become increasingly dense during the day, especially in the west and south. In the south, some high fog is also to be expected in some places. In Tyrol and Vorarlberg, it may start to rain lightly towards the evening, with snow falling above 1,000 to 1,300 meters above sea level. The wind will blow weakly to moderately from mainly east to south. Early temperatures are minus four to plus three degrees; daytime highs in high fog are only around two degrees; otherwise, up to eleven degrees.
Overcast skies and rain or snow on Saturday
The sky will be overcast on Saturday, with widespread rain or snow. The snow line will drop rapidly in the west and north-west down to the valleys, in the north and east to the lowlands by the evening, and only in the south will it be mostly above 1,000 meters for the time being. Early morning temperatures range between minus one and plus five degrees; daytime highs range between two and seven degrees. From night to Sunday, it will be wintry everywhere with snowfall and frost, most recently in the south.
Sunday will also be wintry in large parts of Austria
Sunday will be wintry in large parts of the country. The sky will be overcast, and it will snow frequently at first, then probably less and less in the afternoon. The wind will blow moderately, becoming increasingly brisk from the north-west to the north, leading to snow drifts, particularly in the north and east, especially at higher altitudes. Early and daily highs are minus six to plus one degree; only from East Tyrol to southern Styria will the daily highs be between zero and three degrees.
